TikTok has been under fire for privacy issues in recent years. In 2019, the FTC reached a settlement of 5.7 million dollars with the platform, because it allegedly collected personal data of children without valid parental consent. In the Netherlands, the privacy watchdog (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) is also investigating the protection of underage TikTok users. The platform now seems to have taken the criticism to heart and has adjusted the privacy settings for minors.
This has a positive effect on the privacy of young users, but also consequences for the use of TikTok .
This is what will change for young people between the ages of 13 and 15:
The 'Suggest your account to others' option is set to Off by default for accounts of users aged 13-15. whatsapp number list This means that your videos will no longer be shown on the 'For You' page. You can still choose to turn this option on yourself.
Upon registration, your account is set to private by default. Only followers you accept can then see the young user's content. You can also change this yourself at the back end and choose to make your account public anyway.
Comments on videos are limited to 'Friends' or 'Nobody'. The 'Everyone' setting has been removed.
Duet or Stitch videos can no longer be created. A Duet is created in response to another video, which then plays side by side. With a Stitch video, you can add your own ending to another user's video.
It is no longer possible for other users to download your videos.
