I have been a member since June 5th this year, after seeing and hearing Hans Jørgen Wiberg (the founder of Be My Eyes) speak at the Pinc congress in Zeist. He is visually impaired himself. He has limited vision after having been fully sighted. He came on stage with a foldable red and white stick and told the story of the non-profit app. A fascinating story.

My experiences
In the few months that I have been a micro-volunteer, BeMyEyes beeps went off twice on my phone. The first time, I was too late to respond. Another volunteer had already reported. The second time, I got a French-speaking man. Or at least a male voice, I didn’t see his face. It was an anonymous conversation. The man asked me to tell him what his computer was showing on the screen.
Computers can be very blind-friendly, if everything works. Then the screen reader works, it speaks what needs to be spoken and a blind person can find his way very well. But if the system has crashed – and systems do – then the blind person has a problem. Then he has to be helped through the first five or ten screens. That's what I did. Done in a few minutes. Blind person happy. Merci beaucoup. " Allez les bleues ," I said.
Is this shampoo?
It is beautiful in its simplicity. The fact that I denmark telegram data have only been approached twice may mean that there are more than enough volunteers. The network as a sense. Popular requests are about colors (“Does this shirt match these pants?”), bottle labels (“Is this shampoo or conditioner or body lotion?”), expiration dates, “Do you see a power outlet in this hotel room?”, “Is this paprika or cayenne pepper?”. Hans Jørgen also told the story of the blind woman who had taken a pregnancy test. And she wanted to ask an anonymous viewer what the result was. As a surprise for her boyfriend.
5 senses
Humans have five senses. Seeing, smelling, feeling, tasting and hearing. Smelling, feeling and tasting, I wonder how you get those stimuli over a network? They are working on an olfactometer , a smell meter that should be able to digitize smell. They are experimenting with electronic noses , but to say that it is mainstream?
But hear? Be My Ears ? A smartphone has a camera and a microphone. Why shouldn't I be able to type what I hear for a deaf person? Yes, the bell of the unguarded railway crossing rings. Or I help him with a conversation by typing what I hear on my phone at lightning speed. I am his teletext subtitles.
I don't know if it's a good idea. But it's an idea anyway.
