IED paved the way for design to new disciplines

“I would dare say that the opening of our first headquarters in Barcelona acted as a catalyst for the map of design training in the city and beyond,” says Andrea Marchesi. Alessandro Manetti agrees: “We landed in the city to create a centre from scratch and with a clear roadmap: as part of the Istituto Europeo di Design, the project brought with it the desire to promote Italian design. At the same time, we arrived as an independent institution that was committed to integrating the development of real projects with companies within the academic environment and to incorporating new paths and territories in the field of design.”

To fulfil their roadmap, alongside traditional spain phone data design programmes , they opted to offer degrees in new fields, which broke with certain existing conventions.

Among the challenges set and achieved, the following stand out, for example, the creation of a three-year university-level programme in Transport Design, today a consolidated and unique higher degree in Spain, or the launch of a Fashion school that would revolutionise the traditional view of the discipline that had been held until then.

From the beginning, they also incorporated programs in the field of Marketing and Communication into their training offer and entered the field of creative management with proposals in the areas of Business Design, Service Design or Design Management, which until now were considered by some to be categories outside the design process.
