I think understanding comes from being in the environment,” says creative director Tori Hinn. “We try to make coding more accessible to everyone. Every Thursday, we invite everyone to bring their lunch and listen to a lightning talk from one of their colleagues. It started as a tech meetup where Figma engineers would educate their colleagues in their field, but it’s since evolved and expanded to other topics. It’s a really easy way to learn about other disciplines and better understand the problems they face.”
In addition to fostering empathy between designers and mexico number data developers, it’s also important to consider how their diverse expertise can be leveraged. The right depth of understanding can have a huge impact on how a project or product turns out, not to mention whether team members feel positive about the co-creation process.
On one level, it just comes down to smart staffing. “ Everything at Figma is collaborative,” Hinn says, “so we try to think carefully about the hiring and staffing process. For example, the design team includes people who are each experts in a specific part of the design world. The product design team works directly with the engineers, but for the most part independently of each other. Each engineering team also handles tasks related to different parts of the product and experience and is deeply integrated with the designers and researchers. On the brand side, our designers work with each other, but they also integrate closely with the developers. So we tried to build teams that have a wealth of experience that will allow us to achieve the most creative results .”
At Wolff Olins, one of London's largest branding agencies, the scope of work is more diverse, and teams are created on a project basis, according to the client's needs.
“We don’t have any full-time developers at the moment,” says senior designer Steffan Cummins. “We used to have developers on a permanent basis, and we can repeat that practice, but it’s always about finding the right person who adapts to the type of work we do. The challenge is that we work with developers in so many capacities – whether it’s website development, creative technology, prototyping or interaction design – and you have to find the right person for each job.”
While this means Cummins and his team can work with the best developers at different stages of a project, in some cases they are not hired until the last minute. “ When it comes to the finer details and the final execution, we usually bring in specialist developers,” he says. “By that point, we know exactly what needs to be done. We have clear information and can ensure that the right people are involved .”
As is almost always the case online
