Like many small, self-funded businesses, we had little cash and few big competitors. There were big online wine retailers and a few new entrants to the market offering daily discounts on quality wines. So, we had to figure out how to stand out and we had to figure out the math of our business quickly.

Ultimately, no matter how passionate you are about a business idea, you need to figure out how to attract customers. And, with so much competition in almost every industry on earth, you have to find a channel that you can win and dominate.

At the time, we couldn’t afford paid acquisition channels. They were much more affordable at the time, but our margins were thin… and did I mention we had to cover our own costs?! So, we had to find channels that would allow us to build relationships with our customers and that would drive regular, consistent sales.
